Buurhakaba lies in the Bay region of southern Somalia, on the main road between Mogadishu and Baidoa. Its name refers to the hills nearby. The town stands close to a group of rocky granite outcrops that rise abruptly from the surrounding plain and are visible from a long way off.
From above, the settlement is a compact cluster of streets and compounds gathered along the highway. Beyond it the land opens into farmland and scrub, crossed by tracks leading to outlying villages.
