Chapeltown lies on the northern edge of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, in rolling country between the city and the Pennine foothills. From above, it looks like a patchwork of housing estates and older terraced streets. A railway runs through the middle of it, and green slopes and woodland push into the built-up area from several sides. The M1 motorway passes close by to the east.
Much of the town's history is tied to industry. The Newton Chambers company worked the Thorncliffe site for generations and produced iron goods, chemicals and, during the Second World War, Churchill tanks. That industrial past still shows in the layout of roads and old works land at the valley bottom.

The old Newton Chambers works occupied the valley land at Thorncliffe. Today its broad plots and service roads read differently from the finer grain of the surrounding housing.
