Felipe Carrillo Puerto lies inland in central Quintana Roo, surrounded by low, flat forest on the Yucatán Peninsula. The town's history gives the map more weight than its size suggests. Under the name Chan Santa Cruz, it was the centre of the Maya rebellion during the Caste War of the nineteenth century. It was also the site of the sanctuary of the Speaking Cross. It was later renamed after Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a governor of Yucatán. A large share of the population still speaks Yucatec Maya.
