Alumina plant
The refinery takes up a large, clearly defined area. It is the reason the town exists, and it gives the map a strong industrial shape.

The map
Fria Map Poster & Print
Fria is in western Guinea, inland from the coast, in hilly and wooded country. The town grew up around industry. In 1960, it became home to one of the first alumina refineries in Africa, which processes bauxite mined in the area. The plant and the town developed together.
This origin is reflected in the map. The industrial site is a large, distinctly shaped area of its own, while the residential streets are arranged in planned groups nearby. Roads connect the two and continue into the surrounding hills, following the terrain rather than a strict grid.
The Konkouré River, one of Guinea's major rivers, flows through the region, and the valleys cut by streams add curves to the landscape. A Fria map poster shows a company town in its natural setting, with the lines of the plant, the housing and the hills.

Planned housing
Residential areas were laid out alongside the industry, and their streets form orderly groups that differ from the winding roads further out.
Hill roads
Outside the centre, roads follow ridges and valleys through the wooded land, creating long curves toward the villages and mining areas.
