Broken coastline
Bays, headlands and harbour walls give the shore a detailed, uneven line. It is the most distinctive element of the whole composition.

The map
Hamada Map Poster & Print
Hamada lies on the Iwami coast of western Shimane, facing the Sea of Japan. From above, the city is shaped by the meeting of hills and sea. The built-up areas squeeze into river mouths and narrow coastal flats, and green slopes rise sharply behind them. The coastline itself is broken into small bays, headlands and harbour basins.
Fishing has long been central to the city, and Hamada's port is one of the main landing points on this part of the coast. The castle hill above the harbour keeps the ruins of Hamada Castle, and the city is also home to Aquas, the Shimane Aquarium, which is known for its beluga whales.
A Hamada map poster has an unusually strong outline. The detailed, irregular coast gives the design a jagged edge, harbour breakwaters add straight geometric strokes, and the streets thin out quickly as they move inland, following valleys into the hills. It is a map in which land and water share the page.

Castle hill
The wooded hill of the former Hamada Castle rises near the port. It forms an open patch among the closely packed central streets.
Valley towns
Inland, roads and houses follow short river valleys between the hills. They create finger-like strands of streets that fade into open terrain.

Why Hamada
A map that means something
For people from the Iwami coast, Hamada means sea air, harbour mornings and green hills behind the town. A poster of its shoreline is a quiet way to carry that to a flat in Osaka or Tokyo, or further away.
The title, subtitle and coordinates are yours to set, in Japanese or English. Choose from five styles, with Blueprint and Noir suiting the harbour especially well. It is available as a $9 HD download or a matte printed poster.
