The map
Izumo Map Poster & Print
Izumo occupies a broad plain in eastern Shimane, formed by the Hii River as it carries sediment down from the mountains. From above the landscape is unusually open for Japan: rice fields patterned with farm roads, clusters of houses, and the river running across toward Lake Shinji in the east. To the north rise the hills of the Shimane Peninsula, and to the west lies the Sea of Japan.
The city is home to Izumo Taisha, one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in the country. According to tradition, the gods of Japan gather here each year in the tenth month of the old calendar, which is why that month is known locally as the month when the gods are present. The shrine's long approach avenue is a clear line on the map.
An Izumo map poster brings together sea, lake, river and plain in a single balanced frame. The central streets form a modest grid near the railway, the shrine district sits at the foot of the northern hills, and the coast curves away to the west. It is a quiet, spacious map for anyone drawn to Japanese mythology or to Shimane itself.

Hii River
The river flows across the plain toward Lake Shinji, a broad channel with embankments and bridges that divides the city and gives the composition its main diagonal.
Western coast
Along the Sea of Japan, the coastline forms a long, gentle curve with small harbours, framing a wider map on the west and balancing the lake on the east.
