The Arakawa River
Its wide channel and levee-lined floodplain separate Kawaguchi from Tokyo. On paper it forms a long pale curve that grounds the dense streets above it.

The map
Kawaguchi Map Poster & Print
Kawaguchi lies in the south of Saitama Prefecture, directly across the Arakawa River from Tokyo's Kita ward. The river forms the city's southern boundary, and several road and rail bridges carry commuters over it every day. Much of Kawaguchi is residential, and its streets fill the map in a close, fine-grained pattern typical of the Tokyo suburbs.
The city has a long industrial history as a centre of cast-iron foundries, a trade that gave it a national reputation. That identity was captured in the 1962 film Foundry Town, whose Japanese title refers to the furnace chimneys of Kawaguchi. In 2011 the neighbouring city of Hatogaya was merged into it, extending the urban area to the east.
A Kawaguchi map poster is mostly about texture. Rail lines, including the Keihin-Tohoku Line and the Saitama Rapid Railway, cut straight corridors through the grid, while the broad, curving Arakawa and its floodplain open up a band of empty space along the southern edge. The result is a busy composition anchored by one wide, calm line of water.

Rail corridors
Commuter lines run north from Tokyo through the city in clean straight strokes, dividing the residential grid into distinct neighbourhoods around each station.
Fine-grained streets
Narrow residential lanes and small blocks give the map a detailed, almost woven surface, especially striking in the Noir and Blueprint styles.

Why Kawaguchi
A map that means something
Kawaguchi is home for many people who work in Tokyo, and a map of it marks the place where daily life actually happens rather than the city across the river. The dense street pattern makes an unexpectedly striking wall piece.
Add your own title, a subtitle or a meaningful date, and edit the coordinates line to suit. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. A free 900 px preview is available before buying the full HD files for $9.
