Kirchhain lies east of Marburg, in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district of Hesse, in the broad agricultural lowland known as the Amöneburg Basin. The river Ohm flows past the town. Because the basin around it is flat, the settlement stands out sharply on a map: a compact cluster of streets surrounded by fields, meadows and the lines of watercourses.
At the centre is a historic old town with narrow streets and a half-timbered town hall.
