Walled old town
The historic centre keeps the outline of its medieval defences, with gates such as the Obertor and a tight network of lanes that reads as a dense oval on the map.

The map
Mayen Map Poster & Print
Mayen lies at the eastern edge of the Eifel in Rhineland-Palatinate, west of Koblenz. The old town is still outlined by the course of its medieval walls, and from above it forms a compact oval of narrow streets around the market square. Above it stands the Genovevaburg, a castle that now houses the Eifel Museum, and gates such as the Obertor mark the former entrances.
The town has been known since Roman times for its basalt, quarried here for millstones that were traded widely across Europe. The old quarry field appears on the map as a distinct zone of irregular forms. The Nette winds through Mayen, and newer districts, roads and rail lines spread out across the gently rising volcanic landscape of the Vordereifel.
A Mayen map poster brings out the layered character of an old German town. The dense historic core, the arc of former fortifications, the river and the outer districts each have their own pattern, and in black and white they combine into a clear, detailed image that suits a study as well as a hallway.

Genovevaburg castle
The castle rises above the old town and now houses the Eifel Museum, its elevated site appearing as a compact block at the edge of the historic streets.
Basalt quarry field
Mayen's millstone quarries, worked since antiquity, leave an irregular pattern of pits and paths at the edge of town, a reminder of the industry that made the place known.
