Market-square centre
The historic core gathers around its central square in a small, dense cluster. The streets fan out from it, giving the composition a clear focal point.

The map
Meerane Map Poster & Print
Meerane lies in western Saxony near Zwickau, in hilly country close to the border with Thuringia. The town grew as a textile centre in the nineteenth century, and its map still shows that period. There's a compact historic centre around the market square, with rows of houses and former factory sites built out along the valley and hillsides.
The town's best-known street is the Steile Wand, a short, very steep cobbled climb from the centre. It's known well beyond Saxony because cycling races have used it as a punishing test. On the map it's only a short line, but anyone who knows it will look for it straight away.
A Meerane map poster shows the character of a mid-sized industrial town in Germany's east. It has a tight centre, radial roads heading out to neighbouring towns, and residential quarters spread over uneven ground. In monochrome, the pattern shows how the town grew compactly around the market and then spread outward along the valleys.

The Steile Wand
This steep cobbled street near the centre is well known in cycling. On the map it's a short, modest line, but it carries a lot of local pride.
Industrial-era growth
Nineteenth-century expansion shows in the longer streets and larger building plots around the old town. They trace the textile boom that shaped Meerane.
