The map
Metlaoui Map Poster & Print
Metlaoui lies in the Gafsa region of south-western Tunisia, at the edge of the mountains where the steppe gives way to desert. It grew as a mining town after phosphate deposits were discovered here in the late nineteenth century, and its map still reflects that working origin.
Railway lines and industrial sites sit alongside the residential streets, and the town is laid out on relatively open ground beneath dry, rocky ridges. To the west the land rises and folds into the Selja gorge, a narrow canyon through which the mining railway threads its way.
The line through the gorge is known to visitors for the Lézard Rouge, a historic train that has carried tourists through the canyon. A Metlaoui map poster brings together the geometry of a company town and the sharp relief of the landscape that surrounds it.

Selja gorge
West of town the railway enters the Selja gorge, a narrow canyon cut through the mountains and home to the Lézard Rouge train.
Rocky ridges
Bare, arid ridges rise close to the town, and on a wider view their contours frame the built-up area against open desert.

Why Metlaoui
A map that means something
For families shaped by the mines of Gafsa, Metlaoui is more than a dot on the map. A poster of its streets, rails and ridges honours that history in a quiet, graphic way that suits a modern interior.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a family name, a date or a few words in Arabic, French or English, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
