Baroque grid
The old town's straight, evenly spaced streets are unusual for a German town of its age and read like a drawing on the map.

The map
Neuwied Map Poster & Print
Neuwied sits on the east bank of the Rhine, a short way downstream from Koblenz, in the broad Neuwied Basin. Its old centre stands out on the map: a regular grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks, laid out when Count Friedrich of Wied founded the town in the mid-seventeenth century.
The founding counts offered religious freedom to attract settlers, and communities such as the Moravian Church and Mennonites came to live here. Their influence remains in the town's buildings and quarters. The palace of the princes of Wied stands at the river end of the old grid, looking out over the Rhine.
A tall flood dike separates the town from the riverbank, a long firm line along the water. The cooperative pioneer Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen worked as mayor of Heddesdorf, now part of Neuwied. A Neuwied map poster shows the planned grid, the palace and the river, with the outlying districts spreading back toward the hills.

Rhine dike
A long protective embankment runs along the river, making a clean boundary between the orderly streets and the broad water.
Palace riverfront
The palace and its grounds anchor the grid at the water's edge, the point where the planned town meets the Rhine.

Why Neuwied
A map that means something
Neuwied appeals to people who like planned cities and clear geometry, as well as to anyone with family ties to the Middle Rhine. The regular grid makes an especially elegant minimalist print.
Personalise the title with Neuwied or a district name, add a date as the subtitle and keep or adjust the coordinates. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper suits the town's seventeenth-century origins.
