The map
Nyūzen Map Poster & Print
Nyūzen lies on the eastern shore of Toyama Bay, in the stretch of coast where the Northern Alps drop steeply toward the Sea of Japan. The town sits on a broad alluvial fan built by rivers coming down from the mountains, and the map shows the shape of that fan clearly: a sloping, open plain with streams running across it toward the shore.
Much of the land is given to rice paddies, with farmhouses scattered among them instead of grouped into dense villages, a settlement pattern typical of this part of Toyama. The town centre is a modest cluster of streets near the coastal railway and highway. Nyūzen is also known in Japan for its very large watermelons.
A Nyūzen map poster shows the coastline running straight along one edge, the rivers crossing the fan and the fine pattern of fields between them. It is a spacious, orderly image of a rural coastal plain at the foot of high mountains.

River fan
Rivers descend from the mountains and spread across the plain, crossing it in several strands on the way to the sea.
Scattered farmsteads
Houses sit among the rice paddies instead of in tight villages, a dispersed pattern that gives the print an even, dotted texture.
