The map
Qazvin Map Poster & Print
Qazvin lies on a broad plain at the southern foot of the Alborz range, north-west of Tehran. It stands on the old route from the capital toward the Caspian and Azerbaijan. From above, the mountains show as a dark mass to the north. The city spreads south across flatter land in a mix of old lanes and wide, straight boulevards.
In the sixteenth century Qazvin served as the capital of the Safavid dynasty, before the court moved to Isfahan, and traces of that period sit at the city's heart. The Chehel Sotoun pavilion stands in a garden square, and the Ali Qapu gateway once led into the royal precinct. Nearby, the covered bazaar and its caravanserais form a dense, irregular block.
Qazvin is also known as a centre of Persian calligraphy. It is the usual starting point for trips to the Alamut valley, where the fortress of the Assassins once stood.
