Hills to the east
Along the eastern side, the flat grid meets forested slopes. The printed streets thin out into a few winding roads, which gives the composition a clear edge.

The map
Sabae Map Poster & Print
Sabae sits on the broad, level floor of the Fukui plain, and from above its streets form a tight, practical mesh of rice fields, factories and houses. A north–south rail line and a main road run through the middle of town. The ground stays flat until the eastern edge, where the streets stop against low wooded hills and the grid comes apart into winding lanes.
The city is best known for eyeglasses. Most of the spectacle frames made in Japan come from workshops in and around Sabae, a trade that began here in the early twentieth century as winter work for farming families. On a map this industry doesn't stand out. It is spread through small buildings scattered across the residential blocks, not grouped into one large industrial zone.
A Sabae map poster shows how evenly the town is laid out: rail line, river, a band of green hills and the careful pattern of plots between them. Nishiyama Park, on a hillside near the centre and known for its spring azaleas, shows up as a soft irregular shape among the straight lines of the streets around it.

Nishiyama Park
A hillside park close to the town centre, known for its azaleas. On the map it is an organic green shape surrounded by the regular blocks of the neighbourhoods below.
Rail spine
The rail line runs north to south through the plain and splits the city into two halves. Streets branch off it at regular intervals, like teeth on a comb.
