The river runs broad beside the city, with sandbanks and channels creating a wide open area that forms the poster's strongest visual element.

The map
Sambalpur Map Poster & Print
Sambalpur lies in western Odisha on the bank of the Mahanadi, one of the major rivers of eastern India. From above, the wide, braided river channel dominates the map, with the city's streets gathered along its eastern bank.
A short distance upstream stands the Hirakud Dam, one of the longest earthen dams in the world, holding back a vast reservoir. Within the city, the Samaleswari Temple, dedicated to the region's presiding goddess, is one of its most important landmarks.
A Sambalpur map poster also recalls the city's textile tradition. Sambalpuri saris, made using ikat techniques in which the threads are dyed before weaving, are known across India. On the map, the dense older neighbourhoods near the river give way to looser outer districts.

Old town streets

Toward Hirakud
Roads lead north toward the dam and its reservoir, connecting the city with one of the region's defining landscapes.
