Şarkışla lies in the western part of Sivas province, on the high Anatolian plateau between Kayseri and Sivas. The surrounding landscape is broad and open, a patchwork of grain fields and grazing land broken by low hills. The district is closely associated with Aşık Veysel, one of the most celebrated folk poets and musicians of the Turkish tradition, who was born in the nearby village of Sivrialan.
