Meeting valleys
The town fills the floors of converging ravines. The old centre takes on a branching Y shape that is unlike most hill towns.

The map
Scicli Map Poster & Print
Scicli lies in south-eastern Sicily, in the province of Ragusa. After the earthquake of 1693 it was rebuilt in late Baroque style, and it is one of the eight towns of the Val di Noto listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Television audiences may recognise it as a filming location for Inspector Montalbano, where the town hall served as the police station.
The town sits where several valleys meet, and the map shows it clearly. The streets fill the valley floors in a Y-shaped pattern, and steep, rocky slopes rise on either side. The old church of San Matteo sits on a hill above the centre, where the original settlement stood before the town moved down into the valley.
A Scicli map poster shows a dense, curving centre pushed into narrow valleys, bounded by cliffs and ridges that hold few buildings. Via Mormino Penna, lined with Baroque churches and palaces, runs through the heart. The contrast between packed lanes and empty slopes gives the map real drama.

San Matteo hill
A rocky hill above the town carries the old church of San Matteo, near the site of the medieval settlement that preceded today's Scicli.
Via Mormino Penna
This street of Baroque churches and palaces runs through the rebuilt centre. It is among the best-known streets of the Val di Noto.
