Lake Tazawa
The deepest lake in Japan forms a nearly circular shape in the landscape, and in the Noir or Blueprint styles it becomes a bold, graphic element on the page.

The map
Semboku Map Poster & Print
Semboku in Akita Prefecture brings together very different places. To the east lies Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan, which appears on the map as an almost perfect circle of water surrounded by forested slopes. To the south lies Kakunodate, a former castle town whose samurai district is known for its preserved residences and weeping cherry trees lining the streets.
Kakunodate's map is the most detailed part: the old castle town was divided into a samurai quarter and a merchant quarter, and the broad, straight streets of the samurai district still differ from the denser grid of the merchant area. The Hinokinai River runs along its edge, with a long line of cherry trees on its bank that draws crowds in spring.
A Semboku map poster can focus on either the lake or the town, and both make excellent compositions. The round lake is almost abstract, while the castle town shows a precise historical plan. In the mountains to the east, the Nyūtō Onsen hot springs lie at the end of winding roads that climb from the valley.

Samurai quarter
Kakunodate's former samurai district keeps its wide, straight streets, which contrast clearly with the tighter grid of the neighbouring merchant district.
Riverside cherries
The Hinokinai River runs along the edge of Kakunodate, and a long row of cherry trees lines its bank, drawn on the map as a riverside path.
