Long parallel streets
The streets run straight and far apart, with deep plots between them. On paper this gives a quiet, linear rhythm that is quite different from a dense city centre.

The map
Shelek Map Poster & Print
Shelek lies in the Almaty Region, on the plain east of Almaty, where water coming down from the mountains is spread across farmland. The settlement takes its name from the Shelek river nearby. On a map it covers a wide area in low density, because houses sit on generous plots and the plots follow long, straight streets.
Seen from above, Shelek reads almost like a diagram of irrigation farming. Parallel streets run in one direction, cross streets are spaced widely, and a patchwork of fields and orchards surrounds it all. Many travellers pass through on the road toward Charyn Canyon, and that road crosses the settlement as a strong, continuous line.
A Shelek map poster keeps the calm order of a steppe village at a scale where each street can be followed. It suits anyone with roots in the Enbekshikazakh district, or anyone who remembers the town as a stop on the way east into the canyons and mountains.

Irrigated field pattern
Around the houses, field boundaries and irrigation lines divide the land into long strips. They extend the geometry of the town well beyond its edge.
Road toward Charyn
The main road east of Almaty runs through Shelek toward Charyn Canyon and the border regions, and it is the dominant line on the map.
