The land around it is gently undulating and farmed, with low hills in the distance, and on a map the countryside shows as a mosaic of fields, ponds and small village clusters.
The railway and the main road both pass through the town, and they give it its basic direction. The older bazaar area has narrow, irregular streets, and newer housing extends along the main routes.
