It was an important centre under the Merovingian kings, and the story of the Vase of Soissons from the time of Clovis is still taught in French schools. The Gothic cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais and the twin spires of the ruined abbey of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes are its main landmarks.
