The map
Staßfurt Map Poster & Print
Staßfurt lies on the Bode river in Saxony-Anhalt, between the Harz foothills and Magdeburg. It is known as the cradle of potash mining: the world's first potash mines opened here in the mid-nineteenth century, turning the town into an industrial centre. From above, the river curves through the town, with rail lines and industrial land following its valley.
Mining left a lasting mark. Subsidence above the old salt workings caused much of the historic centre to sink, and many buildings had to be demolished over the twentieth century. Part of the former centre is now occupied by a lake, which appears on the map as an open body of water surrounded by streets, an unusual feature for a German town core.
A Staßfurt map poster shows this layered story in simple lines. The bends of the Bode, the lake where streets once stood, the railway corridors and the residential districts that grew around them combine into a composition that is both industrial and quietly scenic. It is a town whose map records its own geology.

Bode river valley
The Bode winds through Staßfurt, its curves setting the direction of the main streets, the rail lines and the former industrial sites along the valley floor.
Potash heritage
The layout of rail corridors and industrial land reflects the era when Staßfurt's shafts, the first potash mines anywhere, drove the rapid growth of the town.
