The map
The Dalles Map Poster & Print
The Dalles sits on the south bank of the Columbia River in northern Oregon, at the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge, where the forested western landscape gives way to open, dry hills. Downtown lies close to the river, and residential streets climb the bluffs behind it in a regular grid.
For travelers on the Oregon Trail, The Dalles was a key point where many left the overland route and took to the river. Today the Columbia here is shaped by The Dalles Dam, whose long structure crosses the river just upstream of town.
Interstate 84 and the railway run along the waterfront, separating the downtown from the river. A The Dalles map poster shows a town layered on a slope: river, road and rail at the bottom, then a grid rising toward the hills.

The Dalles Dam

Grid on the bluffs
Streets rise from downtown up the hillside in a regular pattern, with the grid stretching and bending as it reaches steeper ground.

Why The Dalles
A map that means something
The Dalles is where the Gorge ends and the open country begins, and many people feel strongly about that meeting point. A map of the town captures the river, the history and the hillside grid in one frame.
