Uryupinsk stands on the Khopyor River in the north of Volgograd Oblast, a region of open steppe and farmland. The town is laid out on a regular grid of long, straight streets. In Russian speech the town's name is shorthand for a typical provincial town, and residents have taken up that reputation with good humour.
