Rebuilt centre
After the 1966 earthquake the town was reconstructed, and its streets form a fairly regular pattern that stands out against the open land around it.

The map
Varto Map Poster & Print
Varto is a district town in Muş Province in eastern Turkey, located on a high plateau surrounded by volcanic mountains. The map shows a compact town with a regular pattern of streets, set in a broad basin of farmland and pasture. Roads lead out across the open landscape toward Muş and other towns, and small villages are scattered across the surrounding uplands.
The town is known in Turkey for the earthquake of 1966, which destroyed much of Varto and caused great loss of life in the region. The town was rebuilt afterwards, which partly explains its relatively ordered street layout compared with many older Anatolian towns. The winters here are long and harsh, and life in the area has traditionally revolved around livestock and farming.
A Varto map poster shows a small, orderly grid of streets surrounded by wide open land. With so much empty space around the town, the composition feels calm and spacious, and the few roads crossing the plateau become strong graphic lines. For people with family ties to the region, it is a direct and personal reminder of home.

Upland basin

Plateau roads
A few long roads cross the plateau toward Muş and neighbouring districts, forming the main lines that give structure to the composition.
