River Tyne bend
The river forms the southern edge of the town. It widens as it turns east, which gives the composition a strong, flowing boundary.

The map
Wallsend Map Poster & Print
Wallsend stretches along the north bank of the River Tyne, east of Newcastle. Its streets fall toward the water, where the river bends and widens on its way to the sea. On a map, the riverside is the defining edge. Long industrial plots once filled the waterfront, and terraces and later housing climb northward in rows from there.
The town takes its name from its location at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. The remains of the Roman fort of Segedunum are still here and have been opened as a museum site. Much later, Wallsend became known for shipbuilding. The Swan Hunter yards built the liner RMS Mauretania, which was launched here in 1906.
A Wallsend map poster brings both layers together: the Tyne's curve, the large footprints of the former yards and the tight rows of streets behind them. It suits anyone with roots on Tyneside, and anyone who likes a map where history shows plainly in the lines.

Segedunum fort
The site of the Roman fort at the wall's end stands out as a distinct rectangular footprint, surrounded by the later streets of the town.
Terraced rows
Parallel streets of terraced housing run up from the river. They create the regular, striped pattern typical of industrial towns in northern England.

Why Wallsend
A map that means something
Many families in the North East have a relative who worked in the Wallsend yards, and this map honours that connection without nostalgia. It also works simply as a clean study of a river town with Roman and industrial layers.
You can write your own title and subtitle, for example a street, a surname or a launch date, and customise the coordinates line. It is available in Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
