Medieval old town
Narrow lanes climb and twist around the cathedral hill, creating a dense, irregular pattern in contrast with the wider streets of later districts.

The map
Wetzlar Map Poster & Print
Wetzlar is in central Hesse, where the Dill River joins the Lahn. On a map the old town sits on a rise above the river, a tight knot of winding lanes around the cathedral. Newer districts spread out along both valleys, and railway lines follow the lower ground.
From 1689 to 1806 the town was home to the Imperial Chamber Court of the Holy Roman Empire, which is why the young Goethe came here in 1772. His time in Wetzlar led to The Sorrows of Young Werther. Later the town became known for precision optics, especially Leica cameras.
A Wetzlar map poster shows the irregular medieval core, the old stone bridge crossing the Lahn, and the looping streets of the hillside neighbourhoods around it. The cathedral, still incomplete after centuries of building, stands at the centre of the old town's web of lanes.

The Old Lahn Bridge
A historic stone bridge crosses the Lahn below the old town. On the map it is a short, firm line across the river's curve.
River confluence
The Dill flows into the Lahn at Wetzlar, and the two valleys set the direction of the town's roads, railways and newer neighbourhoods.
