The map

Yae is a town in Kitahiroshima, in the mountains of northern Hiroshima Prefecture. It lies in a basin surrounded by forested hills, where the flat valley floor is given over to rice paddies and small settlements. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets along the main roads, with water channels and fields filling the land around it.
The area is known for its farming traditions. Kitahiroshima is home to the Mibu no Hana Taue, a rice-planting ritual with music and dance that has been inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The Chūgoku Expressway also passes through the town, linking this rural basin with the rest of western Japan.
