Yanaul is a town in the north-west of Bashkortostan, near the border with Udmurtia. It grew up around a railway station in the early twentieth century, and the map still shows it. The tracks cross the town in a strong straight line, with a regular grid of streets on either side and the station area at its centre.
Beyond the rows of houses, the land is a mix of fields, woodland and small rivers, typical of this part of the Urals foothills.
