Regular city grid
The centre is laid out in a fairly regular pattern of streets and blocks. This gives the town a clear, compact outline on the flat basin floor.

The map
Zābol Map Poster & Print
Zābol lies in the far east of Iran, in the low Sistan basin close to the border with Afghanistan. On a map the city appears as a compact, largely regular grid on flat ground. Around it are irrigation channels and fields fed by the waters of the Helmand River, which end here in a wide inland delta.
To the north and west are the Hamun lakes and wetlands. Their size changes greatly from year to year depending on the flow of water. The region is also known for the strong seasonal wind called the wind of 120 days. Nearby is Shahr-e Sukhteh, the Burnt City, a Bronze Age site on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
A Zābol map poster shows a city shaped by water in a dry land. The grid of the town is surrounded by branching canals and, depending on the scale you choose, the edges of the Hamun basin. Printed in monochrome, it has an austere, finely detailed look.

Helmand channels
Irrigation canals branch across the surrounding land from the end of the Helmand River. They draw a network of fine lines that frames the city.
Hamun wetlands
The lakes and marshes lie beyond the city to the north and west. At wider scales, their changing outline adds large open shapes to the map.
