Adwa lies in the highlands of Tigray, in northern Ethiopia, surrounded by a dramatic landscape of steep, jagged peaks. From above, the town forms a compact settlement in a valley, with streets winding between the slopes and roads leading out toward Aksum and Adigrat.
The town is known across Africa for the Battle of Adwa in 1896, when Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II defeated an Italian army. The victory preserved Ethiopia's independence and is commemorated every year. The mountains that frame the town are part of that story, as the battle took place among them.
