Alsfeld lies in central Hesse, at the northern edge of the Vogelsberg, on the Schwalm River. On a map, the historic centre stands out as a compact, rounded shape. The old town is known for its half-timbered buildings, above all the town hall on the market square, built in the early sixteenth century. In 1975, Alsfeld was named a European model town for the preservation of historic monuments. The recognition reflects how complete its medieval centre remains.
