Alumínio is a small municipality in the Sorocaba region of São Paulo state, and its name is literal. The town grew around a large aluminium works, and on the map the industrial site stands out as a broad, geometric block of buildings, yards and rail sidings.
The residential neighbourhoods fill the surrounding hills in irregular patches, following the terrain rather than a single grid. A river runs through the valley, and highways connect the town to Sorocaba and to the city of São Paulo further east. Alumínio became its own municipality in the early 1990s, having previously been part of Mairinque.
