Ko e mape
Anak is a county town in the Hwanghae area of south-western North Korea, on one of the country's main agricultural plains. The map shows a compact town surrounded by wide, level fields. Straight roads and irrigation channels divide the land into regular blocks, and the town is linked to neighbouring counties by a few main routes.
Anak is internationally known for its Goguryeo-era tombs. Anak Tomb No. 3, from the fourth century, has well-preserved wall paintings of daily life, processions and figures, and it is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Complex of Koguryo Tombs. The tombs lie in the countryside near the town.
An Anak map poster shows an orderly farming landscape with a small urban centre and long, straight lines in all directions. The fields make a calm, repeating texture, and the town sits in the middle as a denser point. It is an unusual subject for a wall map and a quietly striking one.
The land around Anak is low and level, suited to large-scale rice farming. On the poster this appears as broad areas divided by straight lines, with few curves.
Channels and embankments run in parallel lines across the fields. They give the outer parts of the map a regular, almost graph-paper structure.
Ancient burial mounds, including Anak Tomb No. 3, lie in the surrounding countryside. They are the area's best-known heritage sites and are recognised by UNESCO.
