Anping lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the steep country around the Yangtze and its gorges. The land here allows little room for flat, regular planning. From above, the town fits into the space available, with streets packed into valley floors and following the lower slopes.
Roads wind in switchbacks up and around the hills and link the town with neighbouring settlements and the wider river region. Terraced fields and scattered houses cover the slopes. Streams run down narrow valleys, and the surrounding ridges give the map a strongly shaped, almost sculpted outline.
