Ash Shafā lies in the Sarawat Mountains south of Taif, in Saudi Arabia's Mecca Region, at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres. From above, it looks nothing like the gridded cities of the plains. Roads twist along ridges and valley floors, and houses, farms and orchards are scattered across terraced slopes instead of forming a single dense centre.
The area is known for its cooler summer climate, which draws visitors from the lowland cities. Farms here grow fruit, and the Taif region is known for its rose cultivation. Viewpoints along the mountain roads overlook steep drops toward the lowlands to the west.
