Awuliya lies in the Ili valley of northern Xinjiang, within the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture and not far from the city of Yining. The valley is one of the greener corners of the region, fed by rivers descending from the Tian Shan, and the land around the town is intensively farmed. On a map, the settlement appears as a small cluster within a much larger agricultural grid.
The dominant pattern is linear. Roads, irrigation channels and tree-lined field boundaries run in long parallel lines, dividing the valley floor into narrow rectangular plots. Houses tend to follow these roads in rows, so the town has no dense centre but rather a set of streets that fade gradually into fields.
Because little is written about Awuliya in English, the map itself says the most about it. An Awuliya map poster turns the valley's geometry into a composition of fine, steady lines: the discipline of irrigated farmland, the loose clustering of homes and, at wider scales, the course of the Ili River across the plain.
Long, narrow plots and straight field edges cover the land around the town. In black and white they create a rhythmic, almost striped texture across the poster.
Houses gather along the main roads rather than around a single square, so the settlement reads as a series of lines threaded through farmland.
Zoom out and the broad valley comes into view, with the Ili River and its tributaries crossing the plain below the Tian Shan foothills.

For families from the Ili valley, or anyone who has spent time there, this is a way to keep a precise record of home. The regular field patterns make a surprisingly graphic print, calm and orderly.
