Bālāghāt lies in south-eastern Madhya Pradesh near the Wainganga River, in a district where plains give way to the forested hills of the Satpura and Maikal ranges. From above, the town has a central market area of dense, irregular streets, with newer residential colonies extending outward along the main roads. A railway line cuts through the town on its way across the district.
The district is known for manganese, and mines around Bālāghāt, including the large underground mine at Bharveli, have made it one of India's important sources of the ore. Much of the surrounding land is forested, and part of Kanha National Park, known for its tigers and barasingha deer, falls within the wider district.
A Bālāghāt map poster shows a town between river, farmland and forest, with roads leading out toward mines, villages and the hills beyond. In black and white, the curves of the Wainganga, the long line of the railway and the compact centre come together in a clear composition that reflects the forested landscape of central India.
The broad river winds past the town, its sandbanks and bends forming the most fluid line on the map and contrasting with the straighter roads of the town.
At the heart of town, a dense cluster of narrow streets marks the commercial core, from which main roads branch out in several directions toward the district.
The rail line crosses the town in a long, gentle curve, a strong linear element that divides neighbourhoods and connects Bālāghāt with the wider region.
