Ballymena is in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in the valley of the River Braid. From above, the town has a clear centre where the older streets meet. Main roads spread out from there toward Antrim, Larne, Ballymoney and the countryside, with residential estates filling the spaces between them. The river runs through the town, adding a winding line of water and green banks.
To the east, the land rises toward the Antrim hills and Slemish, the mountain linked in tradition with Saint Patrick's youth. The town grew as a market centre for the surrounding farms and linen industry.
