Baoluan lies in the hilly terrain of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep slopes, terraced fields and narrow valleys east of the city of Chongqing itself. In landscapes like this, towns rarely form grids. Streets follow contours, bend around hillsides and gather where the ground levels out a little.
