Benavente, in the province of Zamora, stands on a rise above the fertile plain where the Esla and Órbigo rivers come together. From above, the old town appears as a knot of irregular streets on high ground, with the river valleys opening out to the west and south. Around it, modern districts extend in more regular blocks across the flatter land.
The town has long been a crossroads. Today, the A-6, A-52 and A-66 motorways meet nearby, drawing bold lines across the map and linking Madrid, Galicia and the Vía de la Plata route. Benavente's medieval heritage includes the Romanesque churches of Santa María del Azogue and San Juan del Mercado.
The castle of the Counts of Benavente survives in part as the Torre del Caracol, now incorporated into a Parador hotel at the edge of the hill.
