Bensheim is a town in southern Hesse, on the Bergstraße, the old route that follows the western edge of the Odenwald hills above the Rhine plain. From above, the town lies exactly on this line: flat land and straight roads to the west, rising wooded and vineyard slopes to the east. Its old town is a compact knot of streets near the centre.
The historic centre has many half-timbered buildings and a market square, and the Bergstraße is known for its mild climate and early spring. Above the district of Auerbach stand the ruins of Auerbach Castle, and below it lies the Fürstenlager, a landscaped park created as a summer retreat for the Hessian court.
