Ko e mape
Beylagan lies in the south-west of Azerbaijan on the Mil plain, a flat and largely agricultural lowland between the Kura and Aras rivers. The town is the centre of the district of the same name. On a map it appears as a tidy settlement of rectangular blocks, broad main streets and low-rise housing, surrounded by a geometry of fields and water channels.
For much of the Soviet period the town carried the name Zhdanov, and it returned to the historic name Beylagan at the end of the 1980s. The name recalls medieval Beylagan, an important city of the Caucasus whose remains, known as Oren Qala, lie in the surrounding district and have long attracted the attention of archaeologists.
A Beylagan map poster shows how strongly this landscape is shaped by irrigation. Straight canals and field boundaries run out from the town in long lines, and the street grid echoes their order. In black and white the pattern becomes almost graphic, a flat plain divided into measured rectangles with the town as its denser centre.
Beylagan's central streets follow a largely regular plan, with long parallel avenues and cross streets. On the poster the blocks read as a clear, orderly lattice at the heart of the plain.
Irrigation channels cut across the flat land around the town in straight lines. They give the edges of the map a distinctive ruled quality, like lines on a surveyor's sheet.
The district holds Oren Qala, the ruins of medieval Beylagan. The modern town takes its name from that older city, linking a quiet contemporary street plan to a long past.
