Ko e mape
Sumgayit lies on the Caspian coast of the Absheron Peninsula, about thirty kilometres north of Baku. It was built largely from the late 1940s as a centre for the chemical and metallurgical industries, and it received city status in 1949. The plan shows its origins clearly: straight avenues, large rectangular blocks of apartment buildings and wide green spaces between them.
The city faces the sea along a long boulevard and beach, and the main streets run inland from the waterfront in a regular pattern. Around the edges, industrial zones occupy large areas of land, with long buildings, rail sidings and storage yards forming a separate, coarser pattern beside the residential city.
Sumgayit is one of the largest cities in Azerbaijan, and in recent years parts of its seafront have been redeveloped with new parks and promenades. On a Sumgayit map poster, the contrast between the orderly Soviet residential grid, the industrial districts and the open Caspian gives the composition a strong, almost architectural clarity.
A long promenade follows the Caspian shore along the edge of the city, and on the map it forms the clean line from which the residential streets extend inland.
The centre was laid out as a planned grid of broad avenues and large apartment blocks, with generous open spaces between buildings in the manner of postwar Soviet planning.
Large industrial areas beside the city appear as a coarser pattern of long buildings, rail lines and yards, a distinct counterpart to the orderly residential districts.

Ko e ha Sumgayit
Sumgayit is a young city, and many families moved there to work in its industries. Its map is an honest portrait of that history and makes a meaningful gift for anyone who grew up by its seafront or still has relatives there.
