Bougado lies in the municipality of Trofa, north of Porto, and its old parishes form much of the town that Trofa became. On a map the pattern is typical of the Minho-Douro countryside: roads that follow ridges and valleys, houses lining them, and small plots of farmland filling the spaces between.
