Busia sits on Uganda's eastern border, directly facing its Kenyan namesake across a boundary that runs through the middle of a single urban area. On the map the two towns read as one continuous settlement, with the frontier visible only as a line through the streets and the customs area where the main road crosses, an unusual shape that makes the border itself the centre of the composition.
The crossing is one of the busiest in the region, handling trucks on the Northern Corridor that links the port of Mombasa with Kampala and countries further inland. That traffic shapes the town: queues of vehicles, warehouses and markets cluster near the border post, while residential lanes and small plots spread out on either side of the highway.
Beyond the built-up area, farmland, swampy valleys and scattered homesteads stretch south toward the northern shores of Lake Victoria, which lies only a short distance away. A Busia map poster shows the town as a meeting point, a place where two countries, a major trade route and a rural landscape come together within a few square kilometres.
The international boundary runs between Busia in Uganda and Busia in Kenya, dividing one urban area into two, a line that becomes the natural centre of the poster.
The main highway from Mombasa to Kampala crosses the border here, a bold line through the map along which markets, depots and truck parks gather.
Low, marshy valleys wind between the farmland outside town, their soft, branching shapes contrasting with the straight line of the trade road.

Ko e ha Busia
Busia is home to traders, drivers, families with relatives on both sides of the border and people who have crossed it countless times. A map of the town holds that dual identity in a single image, which makes it a meaningful gift or a reminder of home.
