Buzen is a city in the east of Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. It faces the Suō-nada, part of the Seto Inland Sea, and takes its name from the old Buzen Province. From above, the city spreads over a coastal plain between the shoreline and the mountains to the south, crossed by rivers flowing to the sea.
The main railway and coastal road run parallel to the shore, and the town centre lies along them. Inland, rice fields and small settlements fill the plain before the land rises toward Mount Kubote, a mountain long associated with Shugendō mountain worship.
