Cai Lậy is in the Mekong Delta, in the former Tiền Giang area now administered as part of Đồng Tháp province. The land is completely flat, and on a map the town is a narrow band of streets along the main road. Canals, drainage channels and waterways run through the surrounding countryside in long straight lines.
The area is known for agriculture, especially rice and fruit orchards, and the town serves as a market centre for the surrounding villages. National Highway 1, the main road through the delta, passes through the area, and much of the local life is organised along it and the waterways that cross it.
