Ko e mape
Capão do Leão is a municipality in the south of Rio Grande do Sul, just southwest of Pelotas, in the level grasslands of the state's far south. From above, the town looks like a scattering of rectilinear blocks laid on open land. Long straight roads run out from it across fields and pasture, with little relief to interrupt them.
The layout is simple and generous. Streets form wide, mostly regular grids, and the neighbourhoods are spaced apart rather than fused into a single mass. Highways linking Pelotas with the south and west of the state pass close by and provide the strongest lines in the drawing. Small streams and wetlands appear as soft, irregular shapes between them.
Much of the municipality's identity comes from education and research. The main campus of the Federal University of Pelotas lies within Capão do Leão, and agricultural research works the surrounding land. A Capão do Leão map poster gives weight to this quiet, spread-out geography, where town, campus and countryside sit side by side.
The Capão do Leão campus of the Federal University of Pelotas forms its own cluster of buildings and internal roads. Open ground separates it from the town grid.
Highways toward Pelotas and the interior cross the flat terrain in long, nearly straight strokes. On a map with little relief, they are the dominant lines.
Beyond the built area the land is level and sparsely drawn. The town's blocks read clearly against a pale, quiet background of fields and wetland.
